Phyllostachys nigra ‘Bory’ — Leopard/Snakeskin
Many of the nigra species went into flowering over the past 5 or 6 years. Our Bory flowered in 2021 and is just now beginning to recover.
Gregarious flowering is a type of bamboo flowering where many plants of the same species (even worldwide) all flower around the same time.
In Plain Terms:
Bamboo normally grows for many years (decades) without flowering. But with gregarious flowering, when it finally does flower, it’s like an “alarm clock” goes off for the whole species. Large numbers of plants—sometimes across continents—start flowering in the same general time period.
After flowering:
- The bamboo usually produces seeds
- Then most of the plants die back heavily or completely
So you can think of it like this:
“All the bamboo of a certain kind decides to reproduce at once, no matter where it is, then often dies afterward.”
This is different from most plants, which flower every year or on their own schedule. Bamboo can go decades (even 60–120+ years) before this synchronized event happens.
Our situation with Bory flowering and then resprouting is a bit of the “survivor” outcome — not every clump fully dies after gregarious flowering, but many do.
Phyllostachys nigra ‘Bory’, commonly known as Leopard Bamboo or Snakeskin Bamboo, is one of the most visually distinctive bamboo varieties in cultivation. Its mature culms develop unique brown, chocolate, and purplish blotches over a green background, creating patterns that resemble leopard spots or snakeskin. No two culms are exactly alike, making each grove a living work of art.
This cold-hardy running bamboo thrives in USDA Zones 7–10 and is highly valued by collectors, landscapers, and bamboo enthusiasts. Mature plants typically reach 30–50 feet in height with culm diameters of 2–3 inches under favorable growing conditions. The striking culm coloration becomes more pronounced as the culms age and are exposed to sunlight.
Leopard Bamboo provides excellent privacy screening while also serving as an exceptional ornamental specimen. Its graceful foliage, upright growth habit, and remarkable culm markings make it a standout addition to gardens, landscapes, and bamboo collections.
