Phyllostachys nigra ‘Henon’ Giant Gray
Phyllostachys nigra ‘Henon’ is one of the most impressive large timber bamboos, known for its size, strength, and muted gray-green coloration that sets it apart from more common green forms of black bamboo.
‘Henon’ is a vigorous running bamboo that can reach impressive mature heights, often 40–60 feet in ideal conditions with thick culms that can exceed 3 inches in diameter. Unlike the deep black canes of standard Phyllostachys nigra, this cultivar develops a distinctive gray to smoky olive-green tone, sometimes aging into a soft powdery gray that gives plantings a more “ancient forest” appearance.
This is a true timber bamboo—upright, strong, and architectural. The culms emerge green and gradually harden into their mature color, creating a layered visual effect throughout the growing season. The foliage is fine-textured and dense, giving it a solid screening quality once established.
‘Henon’ performs best in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistent moisture with well-drained soil. It is cold-hardy for a Phyllostachys, typically thriving in USDA Zones 6–9.
