Semiarundinaria fastuosa — Red / Temple Bamboo is a refined, upright ornamental bamboo known for its strong architectural form and formal appearance in the landscape. It typically reaches 15–25 feet tall, with tightly vertical culms that grow in a narrow, column-like habit. This makes it one of the best bamboo choices for structured hedges, screens, or “living fence” plantings where a clean, disciplined look is desired.
The culms are a deep green that often take on reddish to purplish tones when exposed to cool weather or strong sun, which is where the “Red” or “Temple” name originates. New shoots emerge with a slightly flushed coloration before maturing into smooth, upright canes. Its dense foliage is concentrated along the upper portions of the culms, creating a neat, elevated canopy that still provides excellent privacy without looking overly heavy or chaotic.
This is a running bamboo, but it is generally considered more restrained and orderly in its spread compared to more aggressive timber species. It thrives in USDA zones 6–9 and performs best in full sun to partial shade with regular moisture and well-drained soil. Once established, Temple bamboo is durable, wind-resistant, and long-lived, making it especially well-suited for formal gardens, entry plantings, and tall privacy screens where a clean vertical aesthetic is preferred.
