ArkLaTex Bamboo is a small, family-operated nursery in the Texarkana area of Northeast Texas, growing Phyllostachys bamboo since 2008. Most of our original stock started small — purchased as 1-gallon container plants and put in the ground that first year, where they’ve since grown into the mature groves we harvest and share cuttings from today.
Not every plant in the grove came from a nursery pot, though. Two of our Phyllostachys — a viridis and a Vivax — were transplanted during a “grove grooming” with the Texas Bamboo Society in Porter, Texas. A few years later, three more varieties joined the family with a bit of planning: during a cross-country trip for work in 2014, I made a point to stop at a bamboo farm in Tennessee and came home with a trio of new additions that have thrived in Texas soil ever since.
In 2026, the operation became a true family affair when my two sons — 13, and (sometimes, with a little convincing) 10 — started helping out around the farm: harvesting poles and plants, potting up new starts, and cleaning up the groves. It’s become a nice reminder that this nursery isn’t just something we grow — it’s something we’re growing together.
