Phyllostachys aureosulcata ‘Spectabilis’ — is a highly ornamental running bamboo known for its striking color contrast and strong upright form. It typically reaches 20–30 feet in height, with culms about 1.5–2.5 inches in diameter. This cultivar is especially valued for its vivid yellow canes marked with bold green grooves, creating a dramatic striped effect that stands out in both residential and large landscape plantings.
The culms of ‘Spectabilis’ are bright golden-yellow with deep green sulcus (grooves) running along each internode, giving it a distinctly variegated, architectural appearance. In full sun, the coloration becomes more intense, and mature groves develop a strong visual rhythm of alternating yellow and green vertical lines. Its dense, arching green foliage softens the bold culms, making it both eye-catching and functional as a privacy screen or living fence.
This bamboo is a hardy and adaptable runner, performing well in USDA zones 5–9, making it one of the more cold-tolerant ornamental bamboos available.
