Phyllostachys Vivax — Green Chinese Timber
Phyllostachys vivax — Green Chinese Timber is one of the most impressive large-running bamboos used in temperate landscapes. Known for its exceptional height and diameter, it can reach 40–60 feet tall in optimal conditions, with culms commonly 3–5 inches thick. This makes it a true “timber bamboo,” valued for creating fast, dense groves, privacy screens, and dramatic architectural plantings. Its upright, elegant form gives it a strong vertical presence even in large-scale plantings.
The culms are a rich, solid green that intensifies as they mature, often taking on a glossy appearance in good light. Unlike its golden counterpart varieties, Green Chinese Timber maintains a consistent, classic bamboo look with tall, straight canes and a full canopy of broad green leaves. The foliage is dense enough to provide excellent screening while still allowing filtered light to pass through, creating a soft, natural wall effect in the landscape.
This species is a vigorous runner, spreading by rhizomes and capable of forming large stands if not contained. It thrives in USDA zones 7–10 and performs best in full sun to partial shade with regular moisture and fertile, well-drained soil. Once established, it is highly resilient and fast-growing, making it ideal for land stabilization, windbreaks, or large properties where its scale can be fully appreciated without restriction.
