Pleioblastus Distichus ‘Mini’

Pleioblastus distichus ‘Mini’ is a charming dwarf running bamboo prized for its dense, low-growing habit and fine-textured foliage. Growing only 12 to 24 inches tall, it forms a lush carpet of bright green leaves that makes an outstanding groundcover for gardens, pathways, borders, and shaded landscapes. Its compact size and neat appearance also make it an excellent choice for Japanese-style gardens, container plantings, and erosion control on slopes.

Like other Pleioblastus varieties, ‘Mini’ spreads by rhizomes and should be planted with a rhizome barrier or in an area where its growth can be managed. Once established, it creates a thick, weed-suppressing mat that requires very little maintenance beyond occasional edging.

This bamboo thrives in partial shade to full shade, though it can tolerate morning sun with adequate moisture. It prefers fertile, well-drained soil and benefits from regular watering during dry periods. In colder climates, the foliage may be damaged by severe freezes, but the underground rhizomes are hardy and typically produce fresh new growth each spring.

Cold Hardiness: USDA Zones 6–10 (hardy to approximately -10°F once established)

Whether you’re looking for a unique ornamental groundcover, a living border, or a compact bamboo for smaller spaces, Pleioblastus distichus ‘Mini’ offers year-round beauty, rich green foliage, and exceptional versatility in the landscape.
